Standards deliver efficiency, cost savings and data integrity

The increasing interdependencies of the upstream oil and gas industry and the explosive growth of data related to the digitalization of all activities are a challenge for operators, service companies and government agencies. Standardization plays a crucial role in facilitating integration, reducing costs and increasing confidence in data quality.

Real Economic Benefits with Real-Time Data

Cut operational costs, improve oversight and increase safety by shifting analysis and decision-making tasks away from the drilling rig.  To make this a reality, data has to stream from thousands of rig sensors and measuring devices to the control room screens in less than a second. Real time!

Energistics has developed a protocol, ETP, that effectively solves this problem, making it both easy and elegant to monitor what is happening on the rig. Instructions can be issued in a timely manner to correct situations as they develop.  The result?  Fewer people in harm’s way, and the added benefit that experts can be actively engaged on multiple assets from one place.

This solution works seamlessly across a large number of oilfield service providers, thanks to their adherence to Energistics data transfer standards.

Improve the scope and accuracy of your analytics

Timely and reliable analytics are predicated on two assumptions: that you have access to as much relevant data as possible, and that the data is trustworthy.  Our industry standards address these two critical issues.  Standards ensure that data from many different vendors, partners or government bodies are all transferred in a uniform manner.  The detailed metadata that accompanies the data embodies critical information regarding the data source as well as the processes that may have been applied to verify or condition the data, which greatly increases the confidence in the integrity of the data without requiring exhaustive re-verification at each step.

Our ETP protocol also ensures that very large amounts of data from thousands of sensors can be effectively transmitted over the available bandwidth.  Recent tests estimated that ETP required only 1/10th of the bandwidth required by more traditional SOAP protocols.

Future-proof the knowledge and data of your assets

Oil and gas reservoirs often have a life-span of many decades, and the planning of enhanced recovery programs as well as decommissioning activity require access to the reservoir and fluid distribution models built over the life cycle of the field.

This can prove to be very difficult if the model was archived in an application-specific format, which will most probably be obsolete and un-readbale years later.

Energistics maintains self-describing standard formats that are readable at any time in the future, regardless of the application, operating system or reference system they were created from.  This delivers the future-proofing of many man-years of work by expert-teams.

Streamline the Digital Transformation process

Drilling rigs and production facilities are benefiting from increased automation and improved monitoring through thousands of digital sensors combined with AI, ML and Big Data technologies.  Computer systems are rapidly migrating to cloud-based paradigms, while hand-held devices play an increasing role in visualizing and controlling systems.

Effective, industry-backed data standards are a critical piece of this evolving landscape, ensuring a rapid and trustworthy sharing of data across the many departments, vendors, partners and other stakeholders in the digital revolution.

How to Implement Data Transfer Standards

Learn More

Step 1: Adopt

Adopting our data standards will streamline your organization and the workflows that support data analysis, decision-making and modeling activities.

The Energistics Data Transfer Standards and the Energistics Transfer Protocol are available at no cost on our Download page.  We offer public training classes to bring your staff up to speed, or bespoke training for groups if needed.

Step 2: Develop

If you are a service company, a software provider or a data management team within an operator company, you can readily use our standards to develop links that connect your software and data management tools to each other as well as to third-party partners or vendors.

Step 3: Participate

Whether you develop software using our standards or are an adopter of standards, you are welcome to join one or more of our Special Interest Groups (SIGs) to take part in shaping the future development of standards that have become part of your mission-critical data operations.

Step 4: Support

Energistics is a consortium that is funded by its members.  The standards we help develop and make available to the industry benefit all parties, by reducing software development costs and streamlining data flows.  The consortium’s activity needs to be sustained to keep the organization working towards the mission and relevant to all players; our board of industry professionals also provides strategic guidance to the consortium.
